Cybersecurity Awareness at InVision

 0
It’s officially spooky season, and here at InVision, cyber threats are one of our spookiest priorities. Halloween festivities aside, October is known for raising awareness on variety of important topics, including: breast cancer, domestic violence, disability employment, ADHD, and more. This October, in honor of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we’re highlighting InVision’s cybersecurity efforts, and the team behind it all.

In a world of growing technology, hand-held devices, and instant digital connection, the importance of cybersecurity awareness spans far and wide, as cyber threats are ever present – impacting individuals and businesses worldwide.

From malware embedded into clickable links to phishing phone calls and emails, protecting yourself online is essential to keep personal and business data, information, and devices from harm.

Cybersecurity at InVision

As an organization that provides programs and supports to people who experience intellectual and developmental disabilities – handling Protected Healthcare Information (PHI) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines – we understand the importance of cybersecurity.

At InVision, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility guided by clear policies and proactive practices. We promote strong password hygiene, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and regular reviews of email and inbox rules, especially those involving ePHI. Our Information Technology (IT) and Business Intelligence (BI) team run phishing simulations, share monthly tips, and host in-person training to keep everyone informed and prepared to protect sensitive data.

“While protecting PHI is our top priority, our cybersecurity program extends beyond healthcare compliance to safeguard all aspects of InVision’s operations,” Chris Tidball, Director of IT at InVision, said.

In addition to protecting PHI, the IT and BI team work collaboratively to strengthen cybersecurity awareness across all levels of our organization. With the goal of making cybersecurity seamless, effective, and a part of everyday cultures, IT and BI work with external security providers and advanced tools to monitor internal systems, conduct security audits, and develop impactful solutions to cyber threats.

Meet InVision’s IT + BI Team

Together, InVision’s IT and BI teams focus on aligning technology and infrastructure with InVision’s mission; ensuring that our team members are supported within the systems, tools, and technological environments used to deliver expectational services. Without further ado, let’s meet the team!

Gary Boughamer – Vice President, Business Intelligence

Gary was recently promoted to VP-level leadership and is approaching 19 years of service at InVision this upcoming January. In his role, Gary is responsible for overseeing our IT and BI departments. In addition to overseeing this team, Gary works to align technology and infrastructure with InVision’s mission to ensure we are delivering expectational services by setting team members up for success as they navigate systems, tools, and environments.

Gary’s passion for technology goes beyond the workplace; often tinkering with new tools and expanding his knowledge on emerging trends on his own time. Outside of the office, Gary enjoys spending time with his friends and recharging with trips to the gym or exploring outdoors.

What do you like most about working with InVision?

I fully embrace and support our mission, and I genuinely enjoy the people I get to work with every day. I feel fortunate to collaborate with colleagues across departments as well as external partners, and I value the relationships and teamwork that make our work meaningful.

From your perspective, what is the most important part of your job?

The most important part of my job is monitoring industry and technology trends to anticipate what’s coming next. Whether it’s advances in technology, reporting, analytics, or changes in the dynamic world of residential real estate, I focus on identifying opportunities that will position InVision for long-term success.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

I wish more people understood that IT and Business Intelligence are not just about fixing computers or producing reports – they’re about enabling people to do their jobs better and smarter. Our work is centered on problem-solving, safeguarding data, and creating systems that make information accessible, reliable, and meaningful. When employees partner with us early in their ideas or challenges, we can often provide solutions that are more efficient, cost-effective, and secure.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

The best advice is to always pause and think before you click. Be cautious with unexpected emails or links, use strong and unique passwords. Also, remember that IT will never ask for your password – if something feels suspicious, it probably is, and reaching out to our team for confirmation is always the safest move.

Chris Tidball – Director, Information Technology

Chris joined the InVision team 19 years ago and was recently promoted to his current role. As the IT director, Chris is responsible for developing and executing technology strategies which align with the organization’s overall goals, in addition to overseeing the IT team. Working collaborative with his team, and other departments, Chris is dedicated to prioritizing infrastructure and applications that are robust, secure, dependable, and capable of supporting evolving demands.

Outside of the office, Chris is a married father to his three children, and the family's grumpy Jack Russell mix. As a bit of a “foodie,” Chris loves trying new restaurants with family and friends, enjoys grilling and cooking at home, as well as spending time outside, visiting historical places and museums, and watching documentaries.

What do you like most about working with InVision?

While I love working with technology and the excitement of new challenges or cool innovative tools, what I value most is the opportunity to work alongside so many hard-working colleagues. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to serve others who are grateful for the advanced technical resources available to them and the service provided by our team. I especially enjoy hearing stories and seeing the tangible results reflected in report data of how the tools are being used to fulfill our mission.

From your perspective, what is the most important part of your job?

While IT security is undeniably critical, I believe that one of the most important parts of my role is ensuring that we meet the needs of people in alignment with our guiding principles. As a human services organization, we cannot lose sight of the expectations, perspectives, and complex needs of others – whether that’s a new idea to consider, a more efficient process, or a challenge to overcome with a potential solution.  My goal is to keep our department in sync with others and foster collaboration across the organization. We put people first.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

Technology is evolving at an incredible pace, and while that can feel overwhelming at times, it also presents tremendous opportunities. Some also underestimate their potential by not leveraging tools and self-help technical resources available to them. With a curious and open mindset, technology can become a powerful ally for automation and mundane tasks – ultimately making life easier, more organized, and freeing up time for what truly matters such as high-impact projects, deep thought, or even a well-deserved break! We embrace change.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

Protect your digital footprint like your life depends on it. Cyber threats have become more sophisticated and complex than most people realize and have evolved far beyond the obvious bogus email request to wire funds into your account from another country. With a plethora of information already available online from public sources or social media, privacy is becoming increasingly scarce. It’s important to limit the information shared digitally, regularly review privacy and security settings of each account, and use multifactor authentication on EVERYTHING because most passwords can be easily hacked. Educate yourself, your family, and friends regarding examples of real scenarios you’ve experienced.

Diane Sullivan – Enterprise Applications Manager

With a tenure of 8 years and counting, Diane brings 40 years of experience in the IT industry across a variety of leadership roles for both non-profit and for-profit organizations. At InVision, Diane’s duties include developing strategies for enterprise applications, collaborating and identifying opportunities for system improvements, evaluating and recommending new software tools and upgrades, and resolving application issues; all in alignment with business goals.

Outside of work, Diane is passionate about spending time with her family, traveling, and sports. She has visited all 50 U.S. states and enjoys exploring new destinations. Basketball is her favorite sport, having played competitively from elementary school through college, leading to coaching at every level. Diane is still playing the sport she loves competitively and has even represented Pennsylvania in the Senior National Olympics!

The most important part of my job is developing solutions that align with our company standards to effectively meet organizational needs and drive enhancement.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

IT is not just about fixing computers—it’s about aligning technology with business goals to drive innovation. IT builds the systems that collect and store data, and BI makes sense of that data to guide strategy. Together, we help InVision to become more agile, data-driven, and competitive.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

Here are some quick tips to be safe online:

  • Think before you click!
  • Beware of phishing emails and messages – look out for misspellings, urgent language, or suspicious links.
  • Don’t click on unknown links or attachments, even if they seem to come from someone you know.
  • Verify websites before entering sensitive information – look for HTTPS and double-check the URL.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for every account. Consider a password manager to keep track.

Vinnie Ventresca – Business Intelligence Analyst

His primary duties center around creating reports and pulling data for departments across the organization. Additionally, Vinnie helps team members of all levels understand how reports work, what the data is showing, and expand upon how we track, use, and present data.

In his personal time, Vinnie enjoys spending time with his wife, step-son, and two cats, and playing games with his friends. Vinnie and his wife are also celebrating their second anniversary on Halloween this year!

The culture has been friendly in my time working here. I have developed great relationships with my coworkers and leaders.

From your perspective, what is the most important part of your job?

Understanding how we can use the data we have available to create better outcomes for the people we support.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

We cannot fix issues or create helpful tools without knowledge of the issues or where people need help.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

The government and/or any respected business will never ask you to purchase gift cards of any kind and/or will never ask for your password. Don’t even give your password to the IT department, as they will never ask for it.

Mike Trosan – Systems Analyst

With a four year tenure under his belt, Mike’s work is centered around designing smart strategies and creative solutions for complex challenges across hardware, applications, and system-wide issues. Mike also collaborates with internal departments and external vendors to support projects and maintain InVision’s network health.

During his off time, Mike is a proud dad to his 14-year old daughter and Chiweenie, Thor. Driven by curiosity, creativity, and making a meaningful impact, Mike’s hobbies include cooking food from many cultures, geocaching, learning French, and considers himself to be a “book and movies snob.” In addition to his hobbies, Mike regularly volunteers at PNC Park, Acrisure Stadium, and local and national fraternal organizations.

What do you like most about working with InVision?

What I enjoy most about working at InVision is the unique blend of challenge and purpose. I get to collaborate with incredibly smart and experienced coworkers, constantly pushing my own intellectual limits to solve complex puzzles. At the same time, I know that the work I do – whether it's designing solutions, supporting systems, or creating training – has a real impact on our staff and the people we support. That balance of technical problem-solving and meaningful contribution is what makes this role so rewarding.

From your perspective, what is the most important part of your job?

The most important part of your job as a Systems Analyst is ensuring that “others can do theirs.” From an IT department perspective, that impact is even more meaningful because it ultimately helps improve the lives of the persons supported. I’m not just maintaining our computer systems or applications, I’m empowering people.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

I wish more people understood that IT and Business Intelligence aren’t just about fixing things or generating reports – they’re about empowering people. Behind every system we maintain or dashboard we build is a goal: to help someone do their job better, faster, and with more insight. It’s not just technical work; it’s strategic, creative, and deeply collaborative. When done well, it quietly removes friction and helps the entire organization move forward with clarity and confidence. Simply put, if we’re doing our job right, you may not even know we’re there.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

One of the best ways to stay safe online is to be intentional – think clearly about your purpose when using the internet or engaging in social platforms. Not everyone needs to be an influencer, and many influencers present a curated or even fictional version of themselves. It’s okay to share photos with family or work connections; that’s often expected and normal. But it’s also okay to be less interesting online than you are in person.

The internet doesn’t need your whole personality—just the parts that serve your goals and protect your privacy. Being mindful of what you share, who you engage with, and why you're online helps you stay safe and authentic. Use technology to connect, learn, and grow—but always with intention.

Paul Kalkhof – Systems Analyst

Paul’s tenure with InVision began nearly three years ago. In his current role, Paul is responsible for managing software and systems used by InVision’s direct support workforce to document personalized health plans and other medical and important information for the people we support.

Outside of the office, Paul is a father of two, grandparent of one, and a puppy parent. He enjoys hiking with his dog, watching movies, listening to audiobooks, concerts, cooking, and writing stories. He also appears on horror movie podcasts!

What do you like most about working with InVision?

I’m above all a service-minded person. Working at InVision provides me with a lot of unique opportunities to make systems work together, solve complex problems, and develop things to make people’s lives easier. I really like that I get to use both creative and critical thinking in my role.

From your perspective, what is the most important part of your job?

The most important parts of my job are to listen, think ahead, and identify issues before they become issues, and to be knowledgeable about the capabilities and limitations of our systems.

What do you wish more people understood about IT/Business Intelligence?

I wish that people had more curiosity about our systems and how they work.  We have training systems that copy our production systems that allow employees to explore.

What advice can you give to InVision team members and others about staying safe online?

Pay attention and trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is!

A huge thank you to our IT + BI team for their efforts in keeping our organization, and individuals within our organization, informed and protected online. This October and beyond, stay informed and cyber ready. Better safe than spooked!
