Our Guiding Principles at Work | We are Accountable
Accountability is a powerful thing. It is a way to show responsibility, ownership, and even pride in what you do. It can also be daunting in that you are ultimately in charge of your words, actions, and reactions – all of which are a direct reflection of your choice. It is easy to shy away from accountability. To “go through the motions” with a goal of just getting through the day. The problem with this is that you stop yourself from growing, whether it be personally or professionally, and you limit your chances of finding and creating value in what you accomplish and learn.

Being able to be proud of what you do stems from being accountable. You are telling the world that, yes, I know what I need to do, and I can’t wait to show you how good I am at it. No one is perfect though. We will all make mistakes at one point or another. Being able to learn and grow from those mistakes is another aspect of accountability. It is saying that I know what needs to be done and I will put the work in to better myself and show I can do this consistently. We are always accountable to ourselves, but sometimes we are also accountable for others and to others.

Family is a great example of this, as we know we need to be responsible and do things to make their lives better. It can be the same for your job. We need to be accountable to ourselves. To be able to explain, in words and actions, that we know what our role is and that we can do it. Accountability can be taken even further in that we are accountable to our coworkers, whether it is in our team or department, or to others across the company. We should be able to do our work and be able to expect our coworkers to do their work. If everyone can be accountable for their responsibilities, then ultimately work gets easier.

At InVision Human Services we are also accountable to the people we support. It is our responsibility to help ensure the people we support live their lives in a way that is fulfilling to them. And an easy way to do that is to be accountable. To acknowledge the standard and always work towards meeting or exceeding it. By doing our work and being accountable, we give everyone an opportunity to learn more and reach new heights.

Accountability is not a bad thing. It is a way to explain the mindset that you understand what needs to be done, and even if you falter, you are going to keep at it until things get better. And when that happens, you will look for another way to help improve things all over again.
